CLARINGTON, Ohio -- United Steelworkers members kicked off their new "Save Ohio Jobs" campaign Tuesday morning at a union hall in Clarington.
During the announcement, they unveiled a new video and website to further their campaign to restart the Ormet Corporation's smelter in Monroe County. In the coming days and weeks, the union will be calling on officials, community leaders, and the public to sign a statement asking Governor Kasich to use the power of his office to save the more than 1,000 jobs at Ormet.
The video featured at the event included multiple clips of Gov. John Kasich previously stating his determination to keep jobs in Ohio. The video also included clips of Ormet retirees and workers.
Kasich's spokesman, Rob Nichols, said on Tuesday that the Governor's office is open to any ideas the union has that can reverse falling aluminum prices and overcome market forces. He concluded: "To date, the only thing they've proposed is us pushing around the PUCO, which is an independent entity."
Organizers asked those in attendance to visit the website, saveohiojobs.org, to show their support and sign a petition.
