CAMBRIDGE, Ohio -- A Cambridge man, charged in a July 2011 shooting on N. 5th Street, was sentenced in Guernsey County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday morning.
Court records show that Judge David A. Ellwood sentenced 47-year-old Roy Hart to 10 years in prison on charges of involuntary manslaughter, having weapons while under disability, and felonious assault. In May, Hart pleaded "guilty" to those charges.
According to reports from the Cambridge Police Department, 40-year-old Thomas Payton was shot at a residence on N. 5th Street and then staggered to a porch a couple of houses away. While the victim was being loaded onto an ambulance for transport to Southeastern Med, Hart walked towards officers at the scene with his hands in the air, reportedly saying, "I shot him... he was breaking into my house."
Payton was transported to the OSU Medical Center in Columbus, where he later died from his injuries.
